Why I won't renew my SFBC membership
SFBC = San Francisco Bicycle Coalition
As most of you know, I live and work in San Francisco. You probably also know that I ride my bike to work and for errands, because getting around San Francisco is often easier by bicycle than it is by car. OK great, so what's the problem? This morning I was riding to work with my co-worker Jack, and we were talking about cars, bicycles and transportation in general in the city. I was saying that having a bike in the city is great for getting around, but if you ever want to do anything outside the city, you really need a car. Suddenly, out of nowhere, this ugly hipster chick on a single speed yells at me "YOU DON'T EVER NEED A CAR! YOU HAVE A BICYCLE!" I'm like "excuse me? was I talking to you?" She then berates me about how you can go ANYWHERE on a bicycle. I start to try to defend myself, but I stop myself and say: "you know what, I'm really not in the mood to argue with you." She then proceeds to give me the stink-eye for the rest of my ride to work. Seriously, I am sick of the militant attitudes in this city, and organizations like SFBC just foster this attitude. I will continue to ride my bike to work, but I will not associate myself with the bicycle "community" in this city. Tonight is Critical Mass, I think I'm going to rent a bulldozer.
